I heard a commercial on the way home from work on Tuesday and thought I would give it a try. I typically use the Gillette Fusion Power and have done so for about four years I think. I do a lot of shaving, everyday for work and I also shave my head in the shower nearly everyday. Needless to say, I go through a good number of razor blades. One blade typically lasts about a week, but sometimes I opt to be a cheap ass and push it out to two weeks. A check on Walmart.com gets me four blades for $16. Dollar Shave Club says it can do about the same for $6 shipped to my house, albeit without the power vibrating head. Honestly, I don't know what the vibration does, if anything, to help with the shave. Maybe it does, I do not know.
So I ordered my $6 razor and 4 blades from Dollar Shave Club on Tuesday afternoon and they arrived Friday at my house, a fairly good turn around. The razor came in a little brown envelope with the above notecard, pretty funny note on there about free drinks, a handle and the four blades.
The handle is very solid and hefty, feels very well made.

Compare the razor to my usual blade. It is a little shorter and just a tad heavier. It certainly feels more solid and well made than the Gillette razor. Because I have been using the Gillette for YEARS I think I have gotten used to the longer, fat at the end, Gillette. The DSC razor has a sweeping, tapered end that I do not like as much as the Gillette but this is not a deal breaker for me.
I have now spent three days shaving with the blades and I can say that I will continue my membership. For $6 a month, I will get four blades which should last me a month (plus a week or so) so I think eventually I will get ahead and always have a few spare blades laying around. The shave is as good as the Gillette and feels just as good using it. If I had any complaint it would be the spring on the handle. It holds the blade allot more firm than the Gillette which causes the blades to not pivot as smoothly. However, this could be the fact that the Gillette I use is well over three years old and the spring in it might have gotten weak and more flexible. Only time will tell. This stiff spring is not a deal breaker for me.
So, starting this month I am saving $10 a month, $120 a year, on razor blades. Sounds like more gaming stuff for me! If you are interested in trying them out, click here and you will be taken to their site, clicking the link and then signing up will also give me a free month of blades. If you do, let me know how you like the blades and thanks!

Wow, thanks for posting this (even though it isn't gaming content). I ran into their add and thought it sounded like one heck of a deal for something delivered to your doorstep. Then I mentioned it to a co-worker and he told me he looked into it and that the razors were just cheap plastic throw aways you could get at the dollar store. So, I persued it no further. I think your pics and testimony so far are having me look into this once again. My answer to the expense of razors ( and the fact that I hate shaving ) thus far has been to simply grow a beard.
ReplyDeleteI've considered this issue myself. After shaving for three and a half decades, I grew beard instead. If the wife gets sick of it, I'll have to give this a try.
