[Westerns] I am a fickle bitch
Posted by matt jackson
So I am on a hunt, one I have been on for a while. I want a western. I want to run a western game. Therefor, I am on the prowl for a game, I have an idea in my head, but we will see...
+Simon Washbourne called Blood & Bullets. You can get a copy of the physical book from Lulu and Simon also provides the PDF for free on his website. I really like this set up. It seems to work well. The second half of the book has a few pages of good information on the old west.
I have not played this yet, but as I have played S&W(OD&D) for years, I think I got the hang of it. My only real concern is that this could feel like D&D smashed into the old west. This game is supposed to be straight up realistic western gaming, no fantasy involved.
Owl Hoot Trail takes all of our D&D tropes in a blender and mashes them up with all the western tropes. This one if from +Clinton N. Dreisbach (better known as Clinton R. Nixon) and Kevin Kulp and appears to be very old schooly in feel.
This book has a curious set up, the first half is the game proper and the second half is all setting and adventure. An interesting setting for sure. There are halflings, dwarves, elves, and orcs all thrown in an old west setting. Pretty neat idea. The game professes to be a fantasy horror western, I see a whole mess of fantasy and western but not so much horror.
Both of these games are interesting, and each has good and bad with it. At this point, I am not sure which I like more...
